Snapchat Planets Explained: What They Are and What They Mean

If you have opened a friend's profile on Snapchat and spotted a planet badge next to their name, you have met the Friend Solar System. It is a Snapchat+ feature that turns your closest friendships into a little solar system: your friend sits in the middle like the sun, and the eight friends they interact with most become planets orbiting around them. The closer the planet, the closer the friendship.

This guide walks through the full system in plain language. For the complete breakdown with pictures for every badge, see the main guide to Snapchat planets and keep it bookmarked — it is the page most readers start from.

How the Friend Solar System Works

Every Snapchat+ user has their own solar system built from their top eight friends, ranked by how much they snap, chat and interact. You appear as a planet in a friend's system when you are one of their eight most-interacted friends. The badge on their profile tells you exactly which planet you are in their system, and opening your own profile list shows the planets in yours.

Two things decide your position: how often you and that friend exchange snaps and chats, and how consistent that interaction is over time. A busy weekend can move you up, and a quiet month can slide you down.

The Planet Order at a Glance

PositionPlanetWhat it means
1MercuryClosest friend — the person they interact with most
2VenusSecond closest friend
3EarthThird closest friend
4MarsFourth closest friend
5JupiterFifth closest friend
6SaturnSixth closest friend
7UranusSeventh closest friend
8NeptuneEighth closest friend — still in the top eight

Mercury is the spot everyone wants: it means you are that person's number one. If you are each other's Mercury, Snapchat adds a gold ring around the Bitmoji on the friendship profile — the sign of mutual best friends.

How to See Your Snapchat Planets

  1. Open Snapchat and go to your profile.
  2. Scroll to your friends list and tap a friend's name to open the friendship profile.
  3. Look for the planet badge with a small Bitmoji — that badge shows which planet you are in their system.
  4. Tap the badge to see the full solar system view and where everyone sits.

You need Snapchat+ to unlock the full solar system view. A planet badge can still appear on a friendship profile when at least one of you has Snapchat+, but the complete ranked view is a subscriber feature.

Why Your Planet Changed

Planets are not fixed. Your position updates as your interaction pattern changes, so moving from Earth to Mars usually just means someone else has been snapping that friend more than you lately. Streaks, long chats and daily snaps all push you closer to the sun; going quiet pushes you out toward Neptune.

Quick Questions

Do both people need Snapchat+?

For the full solar system view, the person doing the viewing needs Snapchat+. Badges can show on profiles when at least one side subscribes.

Is Neptune a bad sign?

Not at all. Neptune still means you are in someone's top eight friends out of everyone they talk to — that is a strong friendship, just not the very closest right now.

Can I hide my planet?

You can turn the Solar System feature off in Snapchat+ settings if you would rather not take part.
